Madge's tour of fruit - the doerian
Known for its strong sewage-like odour that can be smelled from several metres' distance, the doerian can also been called the 'anti-fruit'. Together with flat shoes, the doerian is particularly effective as a 'Chas-repellent'. In fact, the scent of the doerian is so penetrant, that they are not allowed in hotels, hostels or public transport.
Singapore - 22 September
Today we visited the Battle Box, the English head quarter during the battle for Singapore during WWII. A really impressive insight in history. Our tourguide was Mr Dias, with 71 years old an eye witness of the war, which was very good. Mr Dias did not really like the Japanese tourists, which were also in our group.
Later in the afternoon we went to the train station to book our tickets for the (night)train to Kota Bahru. Compared to the modern MRT stations, the trainstation was pretty shitty. Sunday evening we are leaving Singapore for a 700 km train journey. If things go well we'll wake up in Kota Bahru in Malaysia. Tickets are dirt cheap compared to Dutch standards, only 25€ a ticket (that's including a bed!)
Vandaag zijn we naar het Battle Box museum geweest, het engelse hoofdkwartier tijdens de tweede wereld oorlog. Erg indrukwekkend. Onze gids was meneer Dias, deze heeft met zijn 71 jaar de oorlog meegemaakt, was erg goed. Meneer Dias was wat minder vriendelijk tegen de japanse toeristen in ons groepje.
Later in de middag hebben we kaartjes gekocht voor de nachttrein naar Kota Bahru, 700 km verderop in Maleisië. Kaartjes zijn erg goedkoop, 25€ voor de reis, inclusief een bed. Zondag verlaten we Singapoure en gaan verder naar Maleisië.
