Pulau Perhentian to Cameron Highlands - 29 September

After a bad day yesterday, where my stomache problems prevented us from travelling onwards as planned, I thankfully managed to recover partly last night, which meant we could continue our travels this morning. We got the fast boat this morning back to the mainland. This time the ride was much less bumpy and uncomfortable as on the way there, partially because it was a slightly larger boat, partially becausee, in true Asia style the captain managed to squeeze a total of 25 people on the boat, 15 in excess of the recommended maximum of 10 passengers, which meant the boat was much heavier and slightly slower.

Back in Kuala Besut we caught a minibus to the Cameron Highlands, a pretty comfortable, airconditioned trip of 6 hours which took us through some beautiful scenery of lush green jungle. We’re now staying at a place called Father’s Guesthouse, which is pretty basic, but at €7,50 per night a bargain. Plus they have warm showers which particularly Rene is happy about as our beach bungalow only had a cold water shower. Tomorrow we’re planning to take a tour through the Highlands, and then it’s on to Kuala Lumpur.

Pulau Perhentian - 28 September

Het snorkelen gisteren was weer fantastisch. We gingen met een bootje naar een aantal verschillede snorkelplekken langs de kust, die wat moeilijker vanaf het strand te bereiken waren. Eerst naar Shark Point waar we 2 reef haaien zagen, eentje ruim 1 meter lang. Als laatste naar prachtig koraal in de buurt van het strandje waar we de dag ervoor waren waar we heel veel vissen zagen, waaronder een ‘Bump head fish’, een enorme vis met een grote knobbel op zijn hoofd waarmee hij het koraal kapot stoot. Het meest indrukwekkende zagen we op de tweede snorkling site: een enorme zeeschildpad van wel 1½ meter lang, die op de zandbodem zeegras aan het eten was. Wat een enorme dieren! Op een gegeven moment kwam ze zelfs even naar boven en stak ze haar kop boven water uit.

Vandaag gaat jammer genoeg niet helemaal volgens plan. Vanochtend werd ik om 5 uur wakker, 3 uur voordat we de boot terug naar de kust zouden nemen, met enorme maag en darmkrampen en een misselijk gevoel. Het leek ons niet zo’n goed idee om onder deze omstandigheden verder te reizen en dus is Rene de tickets voor de boot gaan verwisselen naar morgen zodat ik vandaag hier een beetje rustig uit kan zieken.

Pulau Perhentian - 27 September

We’re still loving this island. Yesterday, after having breakfast on the beach, we rented a canoe and snorkling equipment and peddled around the island to a wonderful deserted beach. It was the most beautiful beach I had ever seen: clearblue water, fine white sand and the green jungle starting about 15 meters inland! The entire island is densily covered in jungle which is full of flying squirrel, bats and monkeys – the other day we saw a couple of monkeys when returning from snorkling. We had a little trouble actually getting to the beach - when we tried to peddle there, the canoe tipped over because of the strong waves in the surf, launching all our stuff in the water – thankfully we managed to retrieve everything quickly and the towels and caps that we put in a tied binbag were still dry. We then went snorkling and swam to the next beach. The coral was beautiful and we saw a big group of fish, nearly 100, all swimming together.

Today will look pretty much the same with some more snorkling. Tomorrow, we’re catching an early boat back to the mainland and then a minibus to the Cameron Highlands.
